Recycled robots invade McKinney elementary school

Slaughter Elementary celebrated Earth Day with super sculptures
Robots made of recycled aluminum cans and cereal boxes turned heads in the halls of Slaughter Elementary School Wednesday morning. Handmade recycled sculptures created by students from kindergarten to fifth grade were on display as a part of the school’s Earth Day sculpture contest headed up by PTO First V.P. Amber Richards and First Grade Teacher Audrey Evans.
Students used recyclable materials to sculpt a variety of subjects and while robots were definitely one of the most popular themes, there were also sculptures of famous landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and Big Ben as well as animal sculptures, self-portraits, flowers, trucks, a carousel and a mermaid.
Richards said she expected to see 30-40 entries come in on Wednesday morning but was thrilled to have over 100. She said there were so many entries she was going to need to buy more prizes.
The first place entries for each grade received a T-Shirt, punch ball and eraser. The second place entries received a punch ball and eraser and the third place entries received a slinky and eraser. The grand prize winner, third-grader Rebecca Ramirez won four tickets to the movies.
Students used everything from old bicycle tires and medicine bottles to foil, water bottles, milk jugs, newspaper and straws to create sculptures that were judged on their content of recycled materials, originality and complexity.
Kindergarten winners were Cedric McEnroe, first place, Joseph Sharker, second place, and Jeremy Adkins, third place.
First grade winners were Luz Elena Perez, first place, Madeleine Keowsawaang, second place, and Max Melvin, third place.
Second grade winners were Faith Barnes, first place, Marcus McEnroe, second place, and Donna Zavala, third place.
Third grade winners were Rebecca Ramirez, first place, Nick Dominique, second place, and Jessica Melvin, third place.
Fourth grade winners were Vivian Georges, first place, Hannah Anthony, second place, and Tarryn Del Santo, third place.
Fifth grade winners were Sienna Krier, first place, Sam Ashun, second place, and Laney Bakes, third place.
Other MISD schools celebrated earth day by having “literless lunches,” planting native plants and cleaning up school grounds, conducting recycling drives, picking up trash, using little electricity, and wearing “green” fashions.
