McKinney art students show their work at the district Administration Building

It’s hard to miss the four red monkeys hanging around the walls of the McKinney ISD Administration Building.
The large, red, white, and yellow, identical prints are part of a larger exhibit displaying work from five McKinney schools including Valley Creek Elementary School, Finch Elementary School, Press Elementary School, Cockrill Middle School, and McKinney North High School.
McKinney ISD’s Fine Arts Elementary Coordinator Edith Barton said the art will be on display for three to four weeks before it is swapped out with work from other schools.
“We think it’s a wonderful opportunity for people to see work being done by McKinney ISD students,” Barton said. “Having them up here at the Administration Building is an advantage because we have so many people coming in and out of the building and the work will be seen by a broad group of people.”
Barton said schools are divided into five groups and each group will have work on display throughout the year. Special exhibits for Youth Art Month n YAM n will be on display in the months of March, April, and May. A reception will be held each of these months for the schools with work on display.
“While many of the schools display art on the campus, having it at a central location demonstrates the McKinney ISD art talent to a wide variety of community members,” Barton said.
Art teachers at each individual campus select the work to be shown and are responsible for matting and hanging the art. Barton said students and their families as well as anyone else in the community are encouraged to come browse the halls of the Administration Building anytime between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. A word to the wise, beware of the monkeys!
