The lack of power at portable classrooms at Wilmeth Elementary school last Thursday and Friday has been fixed. A teacher went to the hospital on Friday because she was feeling bad and it was a possibility that it was carbon monoxide related. The teachers name was not released.
Assistant to the Superintendent for Communications Cody Cunningham said the teacher was fine and had been released to go home.
"The cause of it would have been the generator with the exhaust blowing back into the portable building," Cunningham said. "Immediately when we found out that it was a possibility we shut down the generators."
The Wilmeth campus has been experiencing a high growth rate.
"Because of the growth at Wilmeth we moved several addition portable buildings to the campus over the summer," Cody Cunningham said. "We were not able to have electricity hooked-up as soon as we had hoped."
Power was established Monday to the buildings to provide lights and air conditioning.
The in-service schedule on Wilmeth campus was adjusted to accommodate the teachers.
"The meetings planned for the morning were moved to the afternoon so the teachers could work in their classrooms," Cunningham said.
He added that a number of teachers were trying to move in and set up their classes early.
According to Cunningham the campus requested fans to help cool the buildings while the teachers were working in them. This required portable generators to be placed outside the buildings to supply power for the fans.
"Good intensions may have caused this particular teacher to be sick," Cunningham said. "We performed a test today on the carbon monoxide levels in each of the portable buildings and no detections of any carbon monoxide."
